In 1857 Roman Catholic missionary Eugene Casimir Chirouse (1821-1892) established St. Reservation boundaries set by the Point Elliott Treaty of 1855 gave a permanent home to the Snohomish, Snoqualmie, Skykomish, Stillaguamish, and related tribes “Dxwlilep,” the Coast Salish word, means small-mouthed bay.
